Here comes Katrina

Or maybe I should say there GOES Katrina. That is one monster of a storm. I hope and pray that everyone is taking this seriously and are evacuating the gulf coast regions where it is going to hit. I am so thankful it is not going to hit the Carolinas but on the other hand I do feel for the people that are going to experience damage to property and being displace dout of their homes for however long. Lets hope that folks have enough good sense to get out of the way of this storm and there is not any needless loss of life.

On August 22nd I blogged about the picture that my wife took of me at the Royal Z Bowling alley and how I did not like the way I looked. I vowed to do something about it and to motivate myself to make some changes. Thus far, as of this day I have been committed to that end. I started using Lifeclinic on the web and my pocket pc diet organizer program to track my calories and I have been getting on my elliptical trainer every other day running between 30 and 40 min at a time. To this date I have lost 13 lbs which has been a HUGE accomplishment. This shows me that I can DO IT. So, with that in mind I KNOW that I KNOW that I can do it and I know what it takes. It takes self dicipline and will power to DO what I know I must do or not do. I have a long way to go but atleast I have a goal and now I know that I can reach that goal one day and one step at a time.

Katy survived her first week at school and has been working hard on her lesson plans and long range plans that she has to turn in to the principal every Monday morning. Last week Katy spent the entire weekend putting together lesson plans so this weekend she did not have to spend as much time on it. PTL for that.

At church today our Drama Team performed a drama called "Breaking Loose" and they did a very good job if you ask me. I was able to clean the heads on my video recorder early this morning around 1 am and managed to get the video camera to start taping again so I got the whole event on tape.

Hurricane Katrina is now a Category 5 Hurricane which is projected to hit the gulf coast very soon.  Posted by Picasa

There is not enough time in the day folks....

I was heading to bed when I checked my e-mail and noticed two things.

A. anonymous "voice from the past" posted a follow comment on WiFi security on the wrong post
B. I have experienced comment spam on this blog.
C. My picture which was pointing back to our old Jesus Connect Website was not showing up.

I had to fix these errors before I finally go to sleep tonight. Item A was easily remedied by removing the comment from the wrong post and re posting it using my log on so as to keep the conversation fluid and keep everyone on the same track.

Item B was easy to remedy by going in and turning off the ability for anyone to post without being a registered user. In other words if you have something to say you need to be willing to say who you are. If you register as something bizzare or rediculous like Donald Duck the comment you write will just be deleted and no one will get to read it other than myself. I also turned on a feature that forces people to read a string of letters and numbers and type them in in order to post a comment. That will keep any screen scraping computer programs from posting junk to my blog comments section.

Item C was easy to remedy by going to my mirror blog site and pointing the profile picture on one of my pictures there. Now the graphic is fixed and there are no mare place holders with red x's staring at us.

Torture Machine Chronicles

On Saturday I motivated myself to get on the eliptical trainer that is sitting next ot my computer desk. I stayed on it for 20 minutes understanding that I would be punished for this by complaining muscle groups. Sure enough, true to form my body began to complain that evening. I was REALLY sore on Sunday and only a little sore today. So, I plan on getting on the TM every other day for a minimum of 30 min to start out. Today, I am proud to day that I stayed on the TM for 37 minutes. Wahooooo. Imagine that. Yeah, I know, more pain and soreness. I figure that eventually this will start to get less painful and I will be able to endure it better.
Not only am I motivating myself to get off the computer chair and TV couch to get on the TM I am also reminding myself of how I look in the picture that Katy took and I am reducing the calorie intake. I am still stuffing the face but just stuffing it less frequently and reducing the amount of junk I am putting there. LOL
Today I kept my calories under 2000 which for me is a MIRACLE. It is not quite 1500 calories but I am not sure that I really WANT to get that low with my calorie intake. After all, I dont want to shrivel up and blow away too fast aye? hahahahahahahahahaha
Baby steps, tiny little baby steps. One day at a time. Now all I need to do is to find some weights that I can play around with on my off day from the TM so I can start to tone up a little bit. I dont need to do any power lifting or anything but it would be nice to do some basic stuff like curls and bench press and such as that. I am toying with the idea of joining a gym (gasp) BUT we have other more pressing financial NEEDS that are hollering pretty loud. LOL...
Today was Katy's first day with an official classroom and real students as a fully qualified teacher and NOT a substitute teacher or assistant. From what I understand Katy made it through the day withot incident. Way to GO Katy!!!
Last night I watched the Panthers and Giants play one of their pre season games and Carlonia actually lost. That loss ruins their winning streak in pre season but that is ok. After they turned the ball over 6 times they should have expected to LOSE the game.
Tonight Dallas Cowgirls and Seattle Seahawks will throw down in Seattle. Why oh why do I torture myself and watch my team get the garbage kicked out of them? I guess I am hopeful that they will put a team together that knows how to play football again. I will let you know how sick I became while watching them or heck, who knows, they might actually win. LOL

The chicken and the Pig

Our Pastor, Tom Glisson, spoke about us either being a PIG or a CHICKEN with regards to our committment to Jesus Christ. Before I say more I would like to share with you the scripture text that was used today in church.

1 ¶ I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of Godwhat is good and acceptable and perfect.
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
4 For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function,
5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.
6 We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith;
7 ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching;
8 the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

Our pastor spent several moments talking about the difference between making a decision and being committed. He used the example of an airline pilot who makes the decision to line up his aircraft and point it down the runway. He decides to rev up the engines and cause the aircraft to leap into the air and take off. Once the airline pilot pushes the throttles forward and moves the plane towards the end of the runway he will come to a point where he is committed to making this actually happen. The aircraft will reach a specific speed in which the pilot will have to take off and if he does not the plane will not be able to slow down and will probably result in a crash. First there is the decision to do it and then there is a committment to see the act through. Our pastor likened this to marriage. The statistics tell us that 50% of marriages in America fail. Why is that you ask? One of the reasons is a lack of total committment.

Ok, lets get back to the PIG and the chicken and the story that was told by our pastor today. The pig and chicken are walking down the road and they see a sign that is advertising a ham and egg breakfast and the proceeds for this breakfast will be donated to a childrens fund. The chicken looks at this and says to the pig. " Hey lets be a part of this event , I can donate some eggs". The pig was not quite so enthusiastic as the chicken and said " Hey, wait a dogone minute chicken, you can donate an egg or two and keep on going, if I donate I will have to give my all." As you can see, the pig was going to have to sacrifice his all so that ham could be a part of the meal. There was a committment needed unto death. There was no turning back or regrets.

So, with regards to our faith in Christ and our committment to the bretheren are we "chickens" or are we "pigs". If you are a christian and identify with the GRACE and MERCY of God then you have probably called Jesus your Savour. The million dollar question is "have you given Christ your heart and allowed him to be LORD of all in your life?"

In other words do we only give sparse gifts that do not really require a sacrifice (time, talents, property) and is convenient at the time or do we give Christ ALL of ourselves. Are we willing to SACRIFICE everything to be a follower of Jesus Christ and to be obedient to his word, lovers of God and true brothers and sisters who love their neighbors as themselves?

The stage is set

I have seen this story many times before. I am not sure that it is a real story or if the event actually happened. However, I do not believe that everyone who practices Islam believes in Jihad and killing non believers. I believe that there are extremist factions in the Islam religion who are taking something out of their religion out of context and blowing it out of proportion and fueling their mantra and dogmatic beliefs with hatred, jealousy, arrogance and pride. Now , with that said, how many religions on this planet have not had this type of problem from time to time?
The bottom line is this. The stage is set. God's word is the same today, tomorrow and the future and it never changes. The world that we live in is going to get worse and not better, I don't care how many revivals we have or how many missionaries we send out. The purpose of ministry is not to change the world into a better place to live but rather to prepare people for eternity and introduce them to the God Jehovah who loves them and died for all of us. Amen? We may not see Armageddon in our life time but I can guarantee you that in this life time we see wars and rumors of wars, pestilence, diseases, false prophets and the like. Like I said, the stage is set. All we can do is be obedient and share the love of Christ with everyone that we come in contact with.
God bless

An article about Islam , Jihad and extremists in that religion

A long time dear friend of mine who has been in ministry with me asked me to read this and respond. I will respond to this article in my next post but wanted you to read it in its entirety by itself. I have seen this article many times since 9/11 and thought it was something I wanted to respond to.

Please Read

The Muslim religion is the fastest growing religion in the United States, especially in the minority races!!! We are not at war with them but they are at war with us. Their religion instructs them to kill anyone who is not a Muslim, to eventually wipe us ALL out.

Last month I attended my annual training session that's required formaintaining my state prison security clearance. During the training session there was a presentation by three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who explained each of their belief systems.I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to say.

The Imam gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with avideo. After the presentations, time was provided for questions and answers. When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Imam and asked: Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that most Imams andclerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [Holy war] against theinfidels of the world. And, that by killing an infidel, which is a command to all Muslims, they are assured of a place in heaven.

If that's the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?"There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, hereplied, "Non-believers!" I responded, "So, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith sothey can go to Heaven. Is that correct?" The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command tothat of a little boy who had just gotten caught with his hand in thecookie jar. He sheepishly replied, "Yes."I then stated, "Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine Pope John Paul commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr.Stanley ordering Protestants to do the same in order to go to Heaven!"!The Imam was speechless.I continued, "I also have problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me.Let me ask you a question. Would you rather have your Allah who tells you to kill me inorder to go to Heaven or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to Heaven and He wants you to be with me?"

You could have heard a pin drop as the Imam hung his head in shame.Needless to say, the organizers and/or promoters of the 'Diversification'training seminar were not happy with Rick's way of dealing with the Islamic Imam and exposing the truth about the Muslim's beliefs.I think everyone in the US should be required to read this, but with theliberal justice system, liberal media, and the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized.

I am adding this to give some back ground as to why this is happening.
Genesis 3:15 (King James Version)

15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Genesis 3:15 (New Living Translation)
15From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."
Abraham is the founding father of both the Jews through Isaac and the other races through Ishmael, who make up the people of the mid east. These races are generally followers of the Muslim (Islam) religion

More on war driving and WiFi security

More and more articles are popping up talking about war driving and home users who are not locking down their wireless networks. Well folks, it is not as easy as they would make it seem. There are two modes. Unsecured and Secured. If your WAP is unsecured it means that you are broadcasting your SSID to the world and you are broadcasting information via clear text format and NOT having it encrypted via either WEP or WPA. So, with that in mind I set out this evening trying to get my laptop wireless adapter (pcmcia card) to connect to the Motorola WAP in my house with WPA 64bit or 128 bit encryption. After about an hour I gave up. LOL... I am not sure WHY exactly I could not make it work. However I did figure out a work around with regards to securing my access point to the public. Everyone can do this so I would highly recommend you doing this if you have not.
Log on to your wireless router and go into Wireless networking. Turn SSID broadcasting off. When you do that someone war driving in your neighborhood with a laptop that is sniffing for a WAP wont find yours. You can further lock down your WAP by going in and adding the MAC address to an accepted MAC address list on your WAP. That means that if the MAC address that is trying to connect is not found in the approved list it wont make the connection.
So, my WAP is now invisible to outsiders and you have to know my MAC address for my wireless network card to connect.
Here is another word on war driving folks. In some states it is actually a felony if you get caught intentionally connecting to someone's WAP and accessing the Internet without their permission. There are not many states implementing this and I guess some of these laws are more municipal ordinances and not really statutes. So, that means if you war drive like I do from time to time you need to know what the law is because ignorance is no excuse.
When I need to find a place to log on so I can check my e-mail when I am away from home I never go into a residential neighborhood. What I do is I find a busy business district and start scanning for WAP signals and when I find some I just pull into a parking lot and join an unsecured business WAP, check my email and go along my merry way. DOH!!! Why are businesses not locking down their WAP's ?
Did you see the news article in the Post and Courier here in Charleston where the city is going to be implementing a wireless cloud over the entire Charleston peninsula by sometime in 2006 ? They said it would cost 1 million or more to do this but wireless Internet would be free for all within this cloud. Wahoooo, I cant wait. LOL...
Something else I did on my network inside the house is to lock down web access. I installed Weblocker on the kids computer and I turned on IE Content Management control. That means that there is a master password for IE content management on my main pc and if the kids try to go to a site that is being denied they have to figure out the master password to add it to the accepted website list. I also turned off the ability to view unrated sites. So if the site is not rated it wont be viewed by wandering eyes.

Which way will Irene go?

According to the news articles I just read on the NET Irene is still a tropical storm BUT it may be upgraded to hurricane strength sometime Friday night. Well, I suppose that is expected as the experts have predicted that the folks on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico can EXPECT to see a LOT of hurricane activity this year. We have until October/November before hurricane season is over and I predict that Charleston SC will probably see some activity. Even if Irene nails the outer banks of NC we will get a lot of rain and high wind. That is better than a direct hit but nonetheless with Charleston being below sea level we will experience some pretty high tides and plenty of flooding in downtown.
Ok, now that I have the weather portion of this blog completed let me say that not much has changed here. Pretty much same ole thing going on. The kids are back in school and Katy has started her new job as a TEACHER for Charleston County this year. Between now and the 22nd Katy will be attending workshops and Inservice training with other new teachers. Katy is just glowing with all of this new activity in her life even if it is sapping her of all her extra energy. Speaking of that WE need to find a way to get into the bed before 12 midnight. LOL...
I was off from work today and was HOPING to get to sleep past 7 am when Kristina (our princess) woke me up in the process of waking up her brother this morning at 6 am. So, I have been up and at em every since 6 am. Katy and I both crashed and burned this afternoon/evening on our respective TV sleeping positions (LOL) and missed Judge Judy. So, now that happy nappy time is over we can sip coffee and get supper to cooking.
I went to my SECOND interview at MUSC today. It was more of the same unfortunatly. Today I got to answer the same question I had answered before except that the shift supervisors were in attendance to listen to my answers. I think that I am still in the running for one of the three positions and should know more by next Wed when they are supposed to make a decision

Genuine Windows Validation HELL

I just discovered that I am unable to run Windows Update thanks to Microsoft implementing "Genuine Windows Validation" on their Windows Update Website. Thanks very much Microsoft. LOL...
It appears that the "type" of registration code is deemed invalid because it is the type of registration code that is only used in companies that use volume licensing. Volume licensing means that the company receives one master product registration code and they can install it on X amount of computers within their company.
What happens to employees when their company gives them a pc or laptop to take home to do work. They can not run Windows Update now because as soon as Microsoft notices that their product key is a company issued volume license and they are a home user then they will not be allowed to update their OS with the recent Microsoft security updates.
So, that ultimatly means that we will have pc users logged on to the Internet with computers with Microsoft Operating Systems that are not up to date and can be compromised by all of the latest security hacks and possibly create DOS attacks and spread viruses galore. Is that what Microsoft wants??

A time to mourn

We spent considerable time and money today determining that there is not much we can do for Sammy. The vet told us that there is very little chance that Sammy will regain the use of his legs and become a walkable dog again. Sammy is dragging his rear legs around behind him and has already lost control of his bowels. So, with that in mind we decided that it is best to put him to sleep tomorrow. Sammy boy will be sorely missed.
I remember the day that we got Sammy. We were at the flea market in Greenville SC selling computers right after the contract I was on went belly up. I think that we had moved from Simpsonville to Travelers Rest in July two years ago. Anyway, I was doing my thing and the kids came up to me with this cute little brown puppy that you could put in the palm of your hand. They begged me to get the puppy and in light of all the other hardships that we had endured I figured that Sammy would bring a lot of love and joy and happiness into a family that could really use some at that point. It is amazing to me how much joy, fun and adventure that Sammy has brought into our lives. Sammy certainly has his own unique personality. It will be especially hard for me to lose Sammy because I had a LOT of fun playing with him on the bed when I would come home for work and get undressed. Sammy and I would lay on the bed and play rough and tumble and I could get him to bark at me at the slightest facial gesture.
Sammy refused to go to the restroom when we would put him out on the chain but insisted that Katy always walk him and Angel together down the road. Only then would Sammy do his business. Sammy would drive the next door neighbors crazy as he would sit there and bark and bark at Paul Bunyon and clan. That was only when Sammy was on his chain because if you let him loose and Paul Bunyon would be in the yard Sammy and Angel both make a bee line towards him and try to knock him down. Sammy really did take a liking to Paul Bunyon that is for sure.
I know that Sammy is only a dog but he is one of the family pets and we certainly count him as part of our family. We love you Sammy!!!
